As of May 2016, I have been working for one of the coolest companies in Atlanta: Nine Labs. (They didn’t pay me to say that. I mean, not a lot.)
It hasn’t even been two weeks and I’ve already learned more about web design than I did in a year at design school. The amount of passion, research, and thoughtfulness my small team puts into every part of a project is incredible. Having a front row seat to the Nine Labs process is truly a privilege. (Again, I was only paid a humble offering to say that).
The atmosphere is laid back. Tomfoolery and Disney sing-alongs are encouraged. My first day I learned what everyone would want to be reincarnated as in their next life. I was only slightly concerned that the CEO wanted to be a tree. I’ve also met the company’s adorable and lovable mascot, Beya.
I suspiciously noted the missing 8 labs, but Beya is so cute, I didn’t think much about it.
Of course, Nine Labs wasn’t just going to let my first week slide by without a catch. I had to do something more challenging than trying to remember all the words to Disney’s “I’ll make a man out of you” from Mulan, compliments of our Director of Marketing.
My coworker and I were signed up for a competition hosted by Adobe. We had to design and present an app in 3 hours in front 150+ people. It’s what everyone does the first week of a new job, right? Talk about being thrown into the deep end. Thank God there was free wine.
In all seriousness, I’m very excited about this opportunity. The people are smart, the work is fun, the field is forever changing.
I couldn’t think of a better place to explore the world of user experience. Let’s do this.
